Martha Stewart and Armstrong laminate flooring teamed up to transform an Indiana schoolteacher and mother’s kitchen for The Martha Stewart Show’s second annual Dream Kitchen Contest.
Julie Ratliff, an economics teacher at Seymour High School, won producers over with a rap music video featuring her family of eight.
"I flew out to meet the family and learned a great deal about their history and home," said Celia Van Dyk, studio manager for The Martha Stewart Show. "They handed me the original blueprints from1917 and told me the family has been living on the property since 1858. I also discovered that on any given day six to 12 people sit down around the dinning room table for a home-cooked meal – and they don’t even have a dishwasher."
Durability was top of mind when choosing the right floor, Van Dyk said, who worked with Stewart on the kitchen’s floor plan. The lack of a dishwasher however, turned out to be a blessing in disguise, alleviating the worry of a major water-related mishap.

Stewart and Van Dyke settled on Armstrong’s 3 1/2-inch-wide Pacific Heights laminate flooring. The line features embossed-in-registration designs and micro-beveled edging in exotic, oak and other domestic hardwood species. "Choosing flooring is an important decision; you have to consider wear and tear, aesthetics and the care of the floor," Van Dyk said. "The floor looks amazing. The color and the texture are beautiful and the installation went very smoothly."
Milton Goodwin, Armstrong’s general manager, laminates, also appeared on-air to discuss the technical features, style and designs as well as the value of Armstrong’s laminate flooring.
As for Ratliff and her fully renovated kitchen, which now also features Armstrong cabinets, the $100,000 makeover is just another memory to be added to the home’s history.
